EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
