Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
