Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
